mccain, which could foretell what we may hear from john mccain. we haven't heard really very much from him about chuck hagel in this context. we have certainly heard from lindsey graham, and we'll hear from john cornyn coming up on this program who has been fiercely critical. >> i would say andrea two people to watch. you've got one. mccain absolutely because he was someone that was close to chuck hagel. kind of the reform-minded republicans. they clearly broke, parted ways on iraq. i do think that chuck hagel, politics does always matter. i think the fact that chuck hagel full throatedly endorsed bob kerry in nebraska in 2012 will not sit well with other republicans. i think the other senator we need to watch, which this is chuck schumer, the new york democrat, very powerful form heard of the senatorial campaign committee, you know, widely seen as probably the next leader of the democrats and the senate. who was skeptical about the idea of a hagel pick, in part, because of his past statements on israel. schumer, i assume, will get in line. though

. >> what do you say to john mccain who survived five years of torture in the hanoi hilton and others who are very tough on defense but argue that it's really important for the protection of our troops that we not cross this line, that we have to be who we are because we are giving our enemies a weapon to use against our own if they're captured? >> right. let me be clear. one thing to agree 100% on with senator mccain is the notion that torture is wrong. torture is detrimental to our troops. but again, i was speaking personally about how intellectually and personally i understand the arguments and they're right but on a deep down emotional level, when confronted with the news that osama bin laden had been killed, when the nation was going through the conversation about what role did torture play in getting information that led to his capture and killing, and my thinking, being in this morally conflicted space of thinking, well, you know what? i really don't care what it -- what the government had to do to get to this point. but again, i want to reiterate that i don't want to be put in

mccain will end up voting for chuck hagel? >> i don't know if he will or won't, but i know when i believe that chuck hagel will probably be confirmed and that they will find a way back to a friendship or at least a good relationship. >> because of the vietnam experience. >> i think that most people disagree. i believe that chuck shum schumer will vote for chuck hagel. >> let's just point out that we were -- when you see a picture of the east room of the white house, the press corps awaiting, right now hamid karzai and president obama are having lunch, and when they come out, we were told it would be at 1:15. if they come out, they will each make statements and answer questions. clearly the president is also going to be asked about domestic issues. i would suspect guns given that that is one of the prime issues that the white house is dealing with right now as joe biden continues meetings on the gun issue today. chris alissa, when we talk about president obama and what he is facing in changing his team, when david gregory asked

mccain, obviously a troubling factor in terms of mccain's response. >> he is well quadfied. i have known him for years. the president has known him for years. he is entitled to have the people he wants for his cabinet, unless there's? fundamental character flaw or policy difference which would make that person unqualified. i think you have to start with that premise, and i think you start with that premise, then you will not find the disqualifying factors there. chuck hagel is well known to the president. he is very, very well founded in foreign policy, security policy. he is a substantive individual, serious-minded, tough-minded, and blunt. >> is he tough enough to cut the pentagon budget where you know in this era that it has to be deeply cut? can he get that through without republican allies because he does seem to be short of republican allies? >> well, i think republicans and democrats are going have to decide what is our mission. what are the threats? what are the requirements to meet those threats, and then devise a budget that needs -- if you start with a premise, we

it seems to me john cornyn is not going to be for chuck hagel or john mccain. i doubt they're going to be for chuck hagel, but they don't have to be -- they just have to not filibuster chuck hagel, which i don't think they would do barring something new here. i think if we can do a respectable job with defending some of his more controversial past statements in these hearings they will ultimately not deny his second pick. sfoo gun control and the whole gun issue, it's the second anniversary of tucson. we have the hearing, preliminary hearing for james holmes out in aurora, colorado, and awful testimony coming out of that all week. if you are reporting this as well, that the nra has been invited to meet with the biden task force, so that joe biden and his group reaching out to try to at least touch base with, of course, the most vigorous and best organized opponents of any kind of gun lobby. >> it would be shock if anything they didn't. they're not going to have a chance if there isn't an effort to reach out the nra and see if there is any possibility of common

susan paige, we are also seeing the discussion perculating about john brennan. what is clear is there was such a personal connection. barack obama was so happy to be nominating john brennan tore sar. veteran cia. at the same time, with the coincidence of zero dark 30 and all of the talk about the post-9/11 celebration gargs -- enhanced interrogation techniques, that was on john brennan's watch, but what the president is saying is that john brennan is going to be in charge of the newark technical tour to refine drone attacks and continuing this undeclared war and also interrogation techniques to create a legal framework going forward. >> i saw that the president's remarks when he named brennan were interesting because he went exactly at this point. he said he had been an advocate for obeying the law, for being a nation of laws when it comes to these kind of attacks, and i think that john brennan has done a lot since this issue pretty much cost him head of the cia the last time around to try to make it clear that he recognizes the law and recognizes the limits, bu
